The Wellsville High School Trap Team
The Wellsville Rod & Gun Club sponsors and hosts the Wellsville High School Trap Team. Our club provides the use of our trap range for the team and we maintain a dedicated fund that the team can use for ammunition and other expenses.
The Wellsville Trap team competes under the New York State High School Clay Target League, which is a 5-week virtual league, where students shoot at their home range and scores are uploaded weekly. Teams are placed in divisions based on the number of participants with other schools across the state of NY. Each week, students can log-in to the website to see how they rank in comparison to the other shooters in their division, and where they rank amongst other shooters in the state.
Justin Skrzynski, is the Head Coach for the team. In addition to his duties teaching Social Studies and a Fish and Wildlife course at the High School, he is also a Hunter Education Instructor for the NYSDEC, a member of Allegany County Ducks Unlimited, and a member of the Upper Genesee River Branch Chapter of the National Deer Association. Justin provides an excellent example for his students and deserves considerable credit for getting students involved in activities related to our outdoor heritage.
There is a $35 registration fee for all students who participate, which is usually paid for by the Wellsville School District depending on funding. This fee covers insurance, league t-shirt, and a subscription to Pull USA magazine for each student. Additional expenses include the cost of ammunition (12 gauge), team jerseys, firearm cleaning kits, gun locks, eye/ear protection, and miscellaneous tools/equipment related to firearm maintenance. These additional expenses cannot be funded by the school and must be obtained by fundraising. The team’s goal each year is to fundraise all costs so that students and their families do not have to pay any out-of-pocket expenses for the season. Between registration, jerseys, ammo costs for qualifying rounds (10 boxes for the season) and for practice rounds (dependent on fundraising or family’s ability to purchase), costs per students usually run around $300 for the season.
The team has been supported generously by many individuals and organizations such as the Wellsville Lions Club and the New York Conservation Officers Association. If you wish to support the Wellsville High School Trap Team, you can forward a donation to the Wellsville Rod & Gun Club. Specify that the donation is to support the Trap Team and the funds will be deposited in our dedicated fund for their use.
