Our History

The Wellsville Rod & Gun Club was formed in 1915 when a group of smaller clubs, friends, and conservation-oriented individuals came together to start the organization that we know and enjoy today.

In March of 1928, the club was officially incorporated.

In 1941, the 58 acres of club property was purchased from Mr. Paul Duke of Wellsville for the sum of $1.00. Mr. Duke’s generosity cannot be overstated. The property had been under the ownership of the Duke family since 1895.

In 1949, cedar logs were purchased and club members spent their free time throughout that summer building the clubhouse that we enjoy today.

In 1950, the skeet field was developed and the pond was dug.

In 1993, the club applied to the Town of Wellsville for property tax exemption. They were approved for a partial reduction in property assessed value due to the presence of designated wetlands on the property. They were denied a tax exemption based on NYS Real Property Tax Law.

In 1994, the original trap machine was purchased. Ten years later, it was significantly damaged in a flood and repairs cost over $3000.00. Recently, after almost 30 years of service, the old trap machine was replaced with funding from club members, friends and local fraternal organizations.

The Wellsville Rod & Gun Club is thriving even after 109 years of service to the community. We currently have over 300 members, including 87 Lifetime members.
